Our hospital performs a variety of routine and specialized surgeries to meet your pet’s unique needs. All our veterinarians are skilled surgeons, but our staff also includes a board-certified veterinary surgeon who performs complex surgeries that require a specialist’s knowledge and experience. Board-certified veterinary specialists complete three to four years of intensive training in their specific field beyond veterinary school to become experts.

Soft tissue Surgery

Sterilization procedures are routinely recommended to prevent reproductive organ cancers and infections, address hormone-driven behavioral concerns, and reduce pet overpopulation. For female pets, we offer the traditional spay procedure, which removes the uterus and ovaries, as well as ovary or uterus-sparing procedures. Male neuters remove the testes only. Our veterinarians will discuss your options to determine the right procedure and the ideal timing for your pet, based on their species, breed, and temperament.

Soft tissue surgeries are performed on skin, muscle, internal organs, or inside the chest or abdominal cavities, usually under general anesthesia, although some minor skin procedures require only light sedation and a local anesthetic. The most common procedures performed in our hospital include:

Internal or external mass removal
Stomach tacking
Foreign body removal
Abdominal exploratory
Organ biopsy or removal
Cystotomy (i.e., bladder stone removal)

Orthopaedic Surgery

Surgery related to bones and joints is highly specialized, but Cedarwood Veterinary & Animal Emergency Hospital’s board-certified surgeon can perform orthopaedic procedures, so your pet will not need referral to another facility. Surgery can be performed to treat chronic, degenerative joint diseases, or may be required after an injury or accident. We also offer your pet rehabilitation services following surgery to help reduce pain and regain maximum function. Common orthopaedic surgeries performed in our hospital include:

Luxating patella repair
Cranial cruciate ligament repair
Hip joint replacement
Hip salvage surgery
Fracture repair
Angular limb deformity correction

Pain Management

Dogs, cats, and other pets feel pain the same way we do. Extrapolating from human experience, we know that surgery is painful for your pet, and we take pride in providing pain control before, during, and after their procedure to provide comfort and enhance their recovery. We use university-developed pain scales to evaluate your pet’s pain level and adjust our strategy as needed, and our veterinarians may use or prescribe several different medications that will provide synergistic pain relief in different ways. After the immediate postoperative period, your pet may be a candidate for rehabilitation services to further reduce their pain.
